Maligned Merlot
I have a confession: I love merlot. While it's not a current party darling (thanks, Sideways) this wine always delivers, even at a lower price point, which makes it perfect for events.Have you ever tried a cheap shiraz? Cough syrup. An inexpensive pinot noir? That's an oxymoron. Cabernet Sauvignon? Risky. But merlot? Fine every time.
It might not be the greatest bottle ever, but it is reliably drinkable. Merlot (it means blackbird in French, how cute!) is less tannic than Cabernet Sauvignon, which means it's easier to sip. The wine is often described as medium-bodied and food-friendly, and typically hints of berries and plums. Consider it for your next party or when serving chicken or pork for dinner. It pairs nicely with both.
Here are a few of A La Carte's favorite merlots. Give them a try and tell me what you think. Cheers!
P.S. When looking for the famous line from Sideways, I found a documentary called Merlove that was made in response to Sideways' put-down of merlot, "Merlot is ready to be loved again by all..." Now we're talking.
